I experienced a personal tragedy a year ago. My anxiety levels and lack of sleep were both going through the roof. A friend of mine recommended I see Ms. Foster-Engen for a biofeedback session. I knew nothing of biofeedback, but I trusted my friend so I thought I would give it a try.
Ms. Foster-Engen literally saved my life. I was aware of course that our anxieties can affect our body, but I had no idea I could learn to control those anxieties by learning to better control my body; in particular, by learning how to control my breathing. I did NOT want to take heavy duty drugs. Her technique works. I now use what I have learned from her in the car on the way to a stressful meeting, at night when I cannot sleep, and any time I can feel my heart racing or a panic attack coming on.
Ms. Foster-Engen is very scientific as well. She can monitor your response to her therapy, and show you with graphs how the different parts of our nervous and muscular systems are responding. Indeed, I had a great session recently; she was able to show me graphically when I was relaxing, turning off my thoughts, and when my mind was racing. The data corresponded with my experience.
Finally, I find Ms. Foster-Engen to be extremely well educated and knowledgeable not only in the field of Biofeedback, but as a life coach/therapist as well. She is so wise and non-judgmental, and though it’s a professional relationship, she brings a warmth to her practice that makes you feel heard and not just another body in a clinical setting.
I can’t recommend Ms. Foster-Engen enough. I was lost, unable to control the disaster of my personal tragedy, hopeless that anything would get better. I’ll always have this pain, but I am learning to live with it, and actually thrive again, something I thought was impossible. She has given me tools that I can call on at any time that really help me keep at bay the panic and hopelessness I thought I would never lose.

Six years ago, my life felt like a pressure cooker--work, school, family, anxiety...and hypertension that I couldn't get under control even with medication. At my medical provider's office, I saw a flyer for biofeedback therapy, and, in desperation, decided to give it a try.
It changed my life!
Using amazing technology, Lucia was able to show me the effect my anxiety was having on my blood pressure--I would arrive at her office stressed, anxious, and with elevated bp....after working with her to slow and deepen my breathing, and focus on relaxation so my parasympathetic ("rest and relax" response) nervous system could engage; my blood pressure would drop to normal, the anxiety would melt away, and I would feel at peace.
By monitoring my respiration and heart rate, Lucia could give me immediate feedback in the form of a color-coded graph that allowed me to understand how my sympathetic ("fight or flight") response had become my body's predominant state, which was the reason I felt sick and stressed much of the time.The good news she had for me was that, with education, I had the power to correct that, and restore in my body a properly functioning, healthy nervous system.
Lucia is an incredible therapist/teacher; her warmth, acceptance, and kindness made it feel easy to embrace learning these simple, life-saving techniques, and with her support, I have been able to use these skills to deal with the setbacks life brings, including cancer, illness and death in the family, and the changes that are occurring in my body as I age.
After my initial sessions, I have returned periodically when facing a family or health crisis to refresh and deepen my skills--I am beyond grateful to Lucia for using her vast knowledge to help me learn what I can do to manage stress, pain, and illness and become a healthier, happier person.

When my family doctor referred me to you to alleviate work anxiety, I didn't realize that Biofeedback would helped me in so many other ways. I approach problem solving very methodically and more scientifically.
Biofeedback measures my heart rate, its changes and especially the sensors measure the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems that show how I could achieve balance and reduce stressors. Biofeedback is a perfect tool for me since I believe that breathing correctly keeps me at the present, which aligns with mindfulness and the teachings I've learned as a Buddhist.
When I first started therapy with you, my breathing rate was about 14-16 breaths/minute. I am now at 5 bpm.
I use biofeedback breathing (listening to a pre-recorded music at different paces) almost every morning and as a runner, it helps me lower my resting heart rate significantly, besides other means I use to keep my heart rate low. On a few occasions when I was in pain, biofeedback breathing helped me to get out of the panic mode and the pain subsided.
I can't stress enough how biofeedback has made a difference in my life. More importantly, the visits with you before, during and after my divorce helped me tremendously to deal with the stress, not through the biofeedback session alone, but from talking with you.
